The Acropolis

The highlight of any visit to Athens is the Acropolis area.

From The Spice in Athens it is a comfortable 20 minute walk away through some of the most enchanting parts of central Athens. Walk through Plaka and its tourist market towards the Agora and up the hill to the Acropolis. To complete your visit make sure you visit the Acropolis Museum as well.

During busy periods it is highly advisable to buy tickets online in advance - this will save lots of time entering the site and helps beat the crowds!

Try: tiqets.com

The Acropolis website though it is not always up-to-date.

Seen the Acropolis? From our balcony you can see Mount Lycabettus (Lykavittos). The views from here are spectacular and worth the effort, especially towards the evening and sunset. You can get there by car or taxi but if you need the exercise you can walk there as well!

Historic Athens stroll

One of the best things to do in Athens is... stroll! The Spice in Athens is in the ideal location, the historic centre is at your doorstep. Only 2 minutes away is the Athens Central Market - if you like fresh produce markets this is the place to be!

The Monastiraki Flea Market (next to the Monastiraki Metro Station) is another crowd favourite, though the central parts are quite touristy.

Ermou Street and its surrounding alleys and streets is one of the main shopping, dining and entertainment areas in Athens.  Don't forget to try the sweets at Matsouka!

If you walk up Ermou Street it will lead you to Syntagma Square. Every hour and on the hour is the changing of the guard in-front of the parliament building.

All these and so much more are only minutes away from the Spice in Athens.

Food & drink

Athens is not only the political capital of Greece but also its culinary heart! Food is everywhere from classical gyros for around  €3 to modern and sophisticated restaurants.

Atlantikos, near the Turkish Hamam is one of our favourites for inexpensive and delicious Greek seafood.

Another hidden local eatery is Steki (the Theatre Hangout) on Theatrou Street, just 2 minutes away from the apartment.

A very nice option for dinner with Acropolis views is from the A for Athens at Monastiraki Square.

Walking down Athina Street towards Monastiraki will bring you to Dope Roasting Co. cafe.

Mokka Specialty Coffee at the entrance to the market is a good coffee option 2 minutes from the apartment.

One of the nicest bars and definitely the best Thai food in Athens can be found at six d.o.g.s

less than 5 minutes away.
